About Janet, Acupuncturist and Esthetician

Janet Halonen, Licensed Acupuncturist, WisconsinHello.  My name is Janet Halonen, but most of the people I know call me Jan. I am a dually licensed acupuncurist and esthetician in the  state of Wisconsin, and a certified Yoga/meditation instructor. I graduated magnu cum laude of my acupuncture class, and have a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine, and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition.  I am a  member of the National Certification Comission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the International Cupping Therapy Association, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, and FOCUS, which is a women's business networking group in Mequon that promotes the advancement of women business owners, and those in management.

Many people ask me how, and mostly "why did I became an acupuncturist?" Here is my story. I was exposed to "alternative" forms of health care early in my childhood, as my mom was diagnosed with cancer when I was 9.  In an effort to extend and improve the quality of her life, she made many changes in her lifestyle.  She changed what she ate, how she exercised, and most importantly, how and what she thought. She took vitamins, and became quite proficient at yoga. I can recall coming home from school, walking into the living room, and finding her doing a headstand. I remember thinking to myself, "I bet nobody at school is coming home and seeing this". :)  All kidding aside, she was a wonderful woman, and the memories I have of her is what continues to inspire me to do what I do.

Many years later, after years of practicing and teaching yoga myself, I wanted to learn more about how the body worked. At one time I considered going back to school to become a physical therapist, but it seemed to only address the mechanics of movement. I wanted to learn about the body in a way that  addressed the energetic systems of the person that I came to understand through the practice of Yoga and meditation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was that fit. Many people do not realize this, but Yoga is the birthplace of TCM. One of these days,  I will write a little blog about that. Stay tuned.....

After going through school, and starting my own practice, it has developed over the years into a hybridization of all of the healing traditions and techniques I have been priviledged to learn and discover. A good example would be my  frequently incorporating instruction of diaphragmatic breathing and simple stretches into a patient's treatment experience, along with making dietary suggestions.

As a potential patient, I think it is important to let you know what I think  my highlights are as a practitioner. Firstly, I think I am a good practitioner, and what makes me good, is that I am always looking for ways to improve. I continue to take classes, and do many hours of research every week. I consider myself to be patient, and a good listener. I practice non-judgement. I spend a lot of time with my patients, getting to  know them, for I believe that is the best way for me to know how to help, and I always always give my best.
